Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was creating wallpaper designs in the sixties. He got the idea for the cow from his dealer, Ivan Karp. Karp thought he should paint cows as they were so “wonderfully pastoral and such a durable image in the history of arts.”

Andy shocked the dealer with his huge, garish pink cow heads on a bright yellow background. “They’re super-pastoral! They’re ridiculous! They’re blazingly bright and vulgar!” Karp said.
