Barnett Newman

Barnett Newman is another super-cool Abstract Expressionist you’ve never heard of. He’s known for simple compositions, using flat colors, with lines, or what he calls, “zips” as the focal point. [All of his paintings have zips.]

His abstract paintings, when interpreted, all take on very Jewish themes. The title of this particular painting, Onement is an ancient derivation of the word atonement.

In his lifetime, Newman stood in the shadow of artists like Jackson Pollock, but his influence would extend to the younger generation of abstract artists, which included Frank Stella, Donald Judd, and Bob Law.
