Katherine Bernhardt

Katherine Bernhardt describes her style as “tropical, futuristic hippie.” She loves color.

Her large-scale paintings burst with happy, bright images like animals, tacos and watermelons.

“They’re just good colors and shapes. Look at a sock: it’s got really good colors, white with red and blue stripes. Toilet paper is a squarish oval,” she has explained of her subjects. “A cigarette is a line. A dorsal fin is a triangle, and so is a Dorito.”

It doesn’t have to make sense….In fact, she intentionally pairs things that conflict. Just as long as they stand out.

“I’m satisfied and yet never satisfied,” she says. “I don’t like to waste time. Life is short, so I always try to do as much as possible,” she says.
