Man Ray, Silhouette 1916

Man Ray art

I really dig this Sillouette ink and charcoal on board by Man Ray, or Emmanuel Radnitzky. He did this in 1916 as a part of the Dada movement. One source says, the Dadaist anti-bourgeois matrix is evident: the drawing annihilates ballet, one of the artistic codes reflecting the middle-class taste in the “age of capital”. I wouldn’t know much about that; I just know I’m always going to like abstract ballerinas.

I also dig that this is a completely different rendering of ballerinas compared to his contemporaries, Degas and Matisse. It is a cubist rendering of ballet. splitting the main features: movement and melody. Note the violin and music stand at the bottom.

This is in Peggy Guggenheim’s collection in Venice.
