Marianne von Werefkin, Ave Maria 1927

Marianne von Werefkin art

I really dig this Ave Maria painting by German Abstract Expressionist Marianne von Werefkin. Marianne was a trailblazing artist in Germany, alongside Kandinsky, Jawlensky, Munter and the rest of the German Abstract Expressionists, and one of the few females.

I love the colors and I love the city view. Check out the sky. I love the perspective. I like the focal point. I’m not completely familiar with the story but It is supposed to represent the temptation of St. Anthony, to whom “the devil appeared in the form of one or more beautiful women.”

There are actually many paintings throughout history on this subject. I just like this the best.
