Sean Scully

Delighted and inspired by the brilliant light shining off the ancient walls in Mexico, Scully created the Wall of Light series. It was a light so different from his gloomy London he was used to. It seemed to reflect the passage of time, he thought.

They are simple forms…two solid bars; one horizontal and one, vertical. Their texture, placement, and layers of color create a complex jumble of patchwork created in watercolor, aquatints and pastels.

This series includes thirty paintings, completed as far back as 1998, when the inspiration hit, until now. They range from 16×20 inches to 9×12 feet.

I first heard of Sean Scully when I was discovering the Hugh Lane Gallery. His work was once housed there. I fell in love his geometric paintings there.
