Betty Blayton, Roots

Betty Blayton art

I really dig this Roots painting by Betty Blayton. Its so abstract that it took me a few minutes to notice the woman. She is remembered first and foremost as a teacher. [She taught Basquiat, dontcha know] and didn’t really get recognized for her own art until much later.

She was truly a trailblazer. She was also an independent curator, of sorts. She organized many exhibitions that showcased underrepresented artists. She co-founded the Studio Museum in Harlem, which was pretty much unprecedented in that day, given that she was a black woman.
