I really dig this Swarm painting! No idea if this is what he meant when he painted it, but I see a beautiful landscape, with a swarm of text; of letters and characters interrupting it. Like the scenery is so beautiful that words ruin it. I have a very verbal life. So the thought of taking a break from words is both thrilling and terrifying, but sometimes you just need to inhale the beauty on another level.
However, he his comment on Swarm is, Thoughts travel in mysterious ways. A flock of words on a round-the-world flight. Which is really cool too! I hadn’t thought of that, but I like it.
Chris Chaffin was raised in Southern California and began drawing and painting at a young age. Inspired by sixties Pop Art, concert posters and album covers, he studied Advertising Design and Illustration at Northern Arizona University and Art Center. After college he began a 30+ year career in San Francisco as an advertising art director. Now in “advertising recovery” he happily returned to painting in 2011. His focus is on abstraction and how the elements of color, pattern, shape and texture create visual surprise when presented in unexpected combinations. He lives and works in Mill Valley, California.
