I really dig this Kate Moss portrait by Chuck Close. This is a photograph, but Chuck specialized in large scale, super-real paintings, which look like photographs. This was done in 2003.

‘She wore no makeup; she hadn’t combed her hair. My daguerreotypes are not flattering – any flaws on one’s complexion are exaggerated wildly – and I thought she might be upset. But she said, ‘I’ve had enough pretty pictures made of me.’ She understood what it is that I do, and she was perfectly willing to provide it.’

I wanted to feature Chuck today as he passed away two days ago from complications from a long illness.
