I really dig this The Repentant Saint Peter painting by Francisco Goya for several reasons. I love the expression. It is so lifelike, so modern. It was done in 1824, yet it could be a portrait of a someone today. It is not your typical portrayal of St. Peter. For one, he is older. The angst on his face is very real.
When I think of Goya, I immediately think of dark or gruesome paintings like Saturn Devouring his Son. I was not aware that he had done a bunch of religious paintings. But he rarely painted apostles. It is not known if this is a commission or something he painted on his own.
In any case, I love it!
