
I really dig this Lavender Mist painting, by Jackson Pollack. I had never seen this particular one. His paintings are often mistaken for simplistic or “just throwing paint on a canvas.” What looks to the public as just throwing paint down is actually a refined technique of mixing a synthetic paint with materials like sand and glass and flinging it on the canvas, shaping it with brushes, syringes and sticks.
He creates a textured look with layers of impasto paint. His color choice, though carefully chosen, plays second string to the more dominant black streaks. He did this on purpose to guide your gaze.
But, I’m sure anyone could do it.
