Robert Motherwell, Redness of Red 1985

Robert Motherwell art

I really dig this Robert Motherwell screenprint, Redness of Red. He did this in 1985. He’s an Abstract Expressionist painter who was in the New York School, which meant he rubbed elbows with Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Motherwell was the youngest. He collaborated with master printer Ken Tyler on this piece.

He was one of the first Abstract Expressionists to show any interest or proficiency at printmaking. He studied under the top printmakers to learn what he couldn’t convey with painting. This is a collage that includes calligraphy and sheet music.
