Stanley draws from both Abstract Expressionism and his African heritage to create his colorful pieces. He has studied color theory extensively, as well as it’s relationship to structure. He has created almost a visual language where the colors communicate with each other. He lets his paintings lead the way, telling him what to do.
He lives in New York City, but has a studio in Parma, Italy and spends summers there.
There is so much I love about these paintings. I love the mix of color and geometry. But, really it’s the color mostly that I love.
I”m sure this is one of those paintings that people will say, “pshaw. I could do that,” just because he makes it LOOK so easy. It’s not a matter of just throwing around color. Believe me….I’ve tried.
