I really dig this Untitled painting by Cuban artist, Wilfredo Lam. He took his inspiration from Picasso and Matisse. He uses Cubism and Surrealistic art to convey his Cuban heritage. Not really sure if this is supposed to be his actual family or a symbol of something larger.
He thought that society focused too much on the individual and he wanted to show humanity as a whole in his artwork. He painted generic figures to remain universal. He painted mask-like faces. It was important to him to convey Cuban culture and mythology, but his works show universal truths about the nature of man so as to be relatable to non-Cubans.
