“Side dish to Kandinsky”

The Art of Gabriele Munter

Gabriele Munter was a German Abstract Expressionist painter in the early 20th century. She was largely overshadowed by her teacher and partner, Kandinsky [who was pretty great too]. Here are some of her works. She was quite exceptional, I think.

She, herself, claimed she was seen as merely a “side dish to Kandinsky,” but looking at her works, it is clear that she could hold her own.
