Anyone who’s ridden the bus will tell you that it is a wide variety of people. Some sane…some, not so much. While some eschew this diversity, artist, Cindy Sherman wanted to celebrate it, so she created this piece that truly captures it.
Bus Riders was originally shot in 1976, but hasn’t been seen since 2000. shows photos of 15 riders waiting for their bus. They are different personalities, with very different characteristics, including race and age. All of these riders are portrayed by Sherman.
Sherman threw herself into the project, creating a persona for each personality…and becoming that personality. She raided thrift stores for props to create an individuality for each character. She made it so she couldn’t even recognize herself.
The end project shows that she is all of these people. We are all human.
