Julian Opie is constantly inspired. His muses include billboards, classical portraiture and sculpture, dance, Japanese woodblocks, and cartoons. His work is as diverse as his influences. He creates silhouettes, animations, LED animations, and simplified portraits and landscapes. Using a variety of media and technologies to make “paintings” of his subjects, Opie transforms everyday images and experiences, simplifying them into condensed icons.
He considers pictures and signs to be the same entity.
New York Couple is one of a series of screen prints with collage on on Canson Conservation Board. They are intentionally sparse, vague, and ambiguous. The viewer is to come up with their own interpretation. He is merely the trigger.
