Aristide Maillol: Portrait of Auguste Renoir

Aristide Maillol art

I dig this Portrait of Auguste Renoir bust by Aristide Maillol. He did this in 1907. It is so real. So lifelike.

Aristide worked on it while Renoir worked in his summer studio at Essoyes in the Champagne region of France. He shows him as an old man, wearing his favorite hat. He sculpts his face tainted by the effects of his incurable arthritis.

Aristide was a painter, a tapestry maker and a sculptor. He was among the many artists whose work was seized by Hitler in WW2.
