Carla Busuttil, Avoid the News

carla busuttil art

I really dig this Avoid the News painting by Carla Busuttil. This is a part of an exhibition of satirical portraits inspired by author, Ursula K. Le Guin, who, in 1987, declined to write a commentary for an anthology of all-male science fiction writing, She saw the book as an ‘exclusively male […] club, or a locker room’.” She ended her rejection letter by saying ‘Gentlemen, I just don’t belong here’, which she felt was a feeling shared by many women working in today’s art world.

The exhibition is called Gentlemen, I just don’t belong here.

I like it just because I like the childlike composition and because I avoid the news as well. I also am a fan of Ursula LeGuin, though I don’t share her sentiments.

Carla’s art is also greatly influenced by her time in apartheid South Africa. She is an English artist based in Birmingham.
