I really dig this My Mother Drinks Pepsi installation by Kari Upson. It’s actually the second in this series. There is actually an interesting story behind this piece. Her mother adored Pepsi. Her ritual was to have a Pepsi at 4 o’clock every day and follow it with a sound of delight that repulsed and disgusted Kaari.
It’s interesting that she wanted to memorialize this memory. I think it’s really cool that she can take a memory that she wasn’t fond of; an annoyance, even; and make art out of it. She’s taking control and acting as a sort of an alchemist.
I thought it was important to feature Kaari today, as she passed away yesterday from breast cancer.
