I really dig this Maman scultpure by Louise Bourgeois. She created it in 1999 and it has been installed in a number of places.
It was created as an ode to her mother, albeit unusual. The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother.
I like the comparison. It is not something I would have thought of.
Louise was not just a sculptor, she was a fab painter and printmaker in her day. She continues to inspire artists today. You can see Maman at The National Gallery of Canada in Ottowa.
