Luisa Roldan, The Christ Child 1675

Luisa Roldan art

I really dig this The Christ Child sculpture by Spanish artist, Luisa Roldan. I love it for many reasons, First, I love that it was done so long ago by a female artist in 1675. I love the detail. But probably the main one is that it sparked a quest to find out where “white Jesus” came from.

I found it curious that a Spanish artist portrayed Jesus as a white European. I would have thought she would have portrayed him as Spanish or at least more close to his true Judean nationality, but certainly not Anglo Saxon.

This Jesus is looks like a son of privilege, not the stable-born son of a carpenter that most Christians worship. The only reason I came up with is that the Greeks set the standard for white Jesus. This is a very informative article on the topic.
