I really dig this Head of a Woman painting by Pablo Picasso. This is probably one of my favorite PIcassos. He did it in 1939. It’s a painting of his girlfriend, Dora Maar.
I really like the nose. It’s curious though, I don’t think Dora had a very noteworthy nose. I really like the nose. It makes it easy to differentiate from his many other portraits of women
In 1949, Picasso gave the picture to to the Greek people as a gift. in recognition of the country’s resistance to the invading Nazi forces. He put a message on the back, “For the Greek people, a tribute by Picasso.”
It was actually stolen, along with a Mondrian piece from the National Gallery in Athens in 2012 and was just recovered and returned.
