I really dig this At the Seaside painting by Pegeen Guggenheim. She did this in 1945. All of her paintings are in this bright, colorful style that is a combination of Surrealism and what’s called naive art. I had never heard of that before, but apparently it’s what the art of an untrained artist is called.
Pegeen was the daughter of the famous art collector, Peggy Guggenheim, so I find it strange that she hadn’t had any art lessons. Regardless, it’s fabulous.
All of her artworks seem cheery and happy, but always had an unhappy family life and struggled with depression. Some say this is how she coped.
