Pierre Bonnard, Women With a Dog

pierre bonnard art

I really dig this Women With a Dog painting by French artist, Pierre Bonnard. I feel it’s just a great snapshot of the scene. I love the colors and textures…and of course the dog. Just knowing how much time he had to have spent on it is mind blowing in our digital age.

He painted his sister and cousin playing with the family dog in a garden. He uses simple outlines for the people, while drawing attention to textures of the background, the fabric of the dresses, the dog’s fur, etc. He sometimes outlined shapes in pencil and ink, scratching them into the paint. These techniques are characteristic of Art Nouveau and the decorative style a group of young painters known as the Nabis (Prophets), who greatly influenced him.
