I really dig this Gallery of the Louvre painting by Samuel Morse. Yes, that Samuel Morse, the inventor of morse code and the telegraph.

He was a painter well before he was a technological giant. Actually, it was this very painting that spurred his technological efforts on.  This was his attempt to capture the images of the Louvre’s great paintings and take them across the ocean back to his colonies. He wanted to bring Paris to the US, as it was, in attempt to plant art and culture into the young country’s cities and villages.
