Thomas Schutte

thomas schutte art

I really dig this sculpture by Thomas Schutte. It is a part of his Alte Freunde series, in which the subjects’ despondent expressions highlight the vulnerability of the individual against the cruelty and complexity of the vast world. Through his work he explores the human condition, offering a critical perspective on social, cultural, and political issues and visually eloquent commentary on memory, loss, and the difficulty of memorializing the past.

Thomas is very adept at capturing the less-than-ideal expressions of people in distress. But he’s also good at creating softer, more pleasant expressions. It’ an interesting juxtoposition.

Thomas is represented by the The Konrad Fischer Gallery. He lives and works in Düsseldorf.
