I really dig this Abstract Flower 2 collage by Vesna Vrdoljak. It is a small, unassuming powerful punch of hope. It seems very appropriate for today being Easter, specifically and just the whole season in general. It offers some hope. Flowers growing in spite of their surroundings. This is a takeaway that seems especially inspirational for our times.
Vesna created this one of a kind collage in 2018, when she was inspired by 1930s and 1940s constructivism. She found the combination of the abstract and the romantic very appealing at the time. I would wager, more so now. She calls it a very fine and small piece of art.
She says: I make collages to create my own reality. I cut and glue by hand. The limited possibilities of the analogue working method appeal to me. The tactility of mainly old photos and paper is a major value in my work.
With the least possible cuts I want to make a new and neat image. I like to create surreal and undefinable images to offer the viewer his own interpretation. I prefer to display an atmosphere or mood instead of a definite story; mostly tinted with a nostalgic feeling due to the old material I prefer to use.
My collages are about beauty and escapism. The pure aesthetics of composition and color combinations can be very satisfying to me.
Vesna is in the Saatchi gallery. She lives and works in the Netherlands.
